The youth environmental competition — the Niko Ketskhoveli School Award — was founded by CENN in 2015.
The youth environmental competition — the Niko Ketskhoveli School Award — was founded in 2015 by CENN within the project Sustainable Forest Management in Georgia, with the financial support of the Austrian Development Cooperation.
Since it was founded, more than 1,000 schools have taken part in the competition.
What to know if your school has not yet taken part
The Niko Ketskhoveli School Award is a competition for eco-clubs. Experience has shown that it does more than find and reward outstanding eco-clubs, teachers and students: for schools it is a continuous process of new opportunities, of gaining and sharing knowledge, of personal growth and of organisational development.
The competition's core values are a responsible attitude towards the environment, solidarity and cooperation.
Its main aim is to tell school students about the Sustainable Development Goals and to show them how they can make change with their own hands to improve the natural and social environment. Everyone who takes part becomes a participant in the process of sustainable development.
Why the Sustainable Development Goals?
What does sustainable development mean?
Sustainable development meets the needs of the present “without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Gro Harlem Brundtland, 1987.
Sustainable development has economic, social and environmental sides. Development is expected to be economically viable, socially fair and gentle on the environment.
Why is the award named after Niko Ketskhoveli?
Niko Ketskhoveli was a Georgian scientist and writer, and one of the founders of the Georgian school of botany; he was an outstanding defender of our country's environment and a great friend of nature. In 1917 the National Democratic Party of Georgia was founded with his direct involvement, and for years he was one of the leaders of its youth organisation.
His scientific work covers the geobotanical, botanical-geographical and systematic study of Georgia's plant cover and the problems of restoring and protecting it. He also wrote many literary essays, novellas and short stories.
You will find Niko Ketskhoveli's books about his travels and research across Georgia on the competition website.
